A prominent research university asked CVM to evaluate and address deteriorated concrete at the underside of an underground steam vault slab located under the sidewalk. CVM performed an investigation and determined that the humid environment of the steam room below and water and salt attacks from the sidewalk above were contributors to this deterioration.

As part of a larger sidewalk renovation program, CVM worked with the client to repair salvageable portions of the steam vault, remove and replace the remaining portions, engage a mechanical engineering sub-consultant to better condition and ventilate the space and design a robust waterproofing system on the top side of the vault to prevent deterioration arising from sidewalk conditions.
