Cornell University, Big Red Barn Strengthening

Built in 1874, the Barn became the home of the graduate and professional student center in 1992. Cornell sought a solution to structural distress which required regular monitoring, and engaged CVM to strengthen the barn’s structure while bringing it into compliance with current building codes.

CVM worked with University project managers to develop a comprehensive structural and building envelope improvement program, including the introduction of new shear walls, floor and roof diaphragms and the sequential removal and replacement of deteriorated timber sills around the building’s perimeter.
