Exposed architectural concrete framing elements are failing prematurely due to alkali silica reactivity (ASR) in this residential facility at Cornell University. After performing a petrographic examination that confirmed the ASR, CVM assessed shortcomings of previous remediation measures and provided a 10-year strategy to keep the facility operational until its replacement comes on line. As part of that strategy, CVM developed a remote monitoring system utilizing vibrating wire strain gauges to augment annual visual surveys.
